Door Lock Cylinder Replacement

It's a good idea to replace the door lock's cylinders as soon as possible in the event that you lose your car keys, or suspect someone else has. This will ensure that you're only the person who can open your car, and keep other unauthorized people out of it. It isn't easy to replace a door lock cylinder, as it typically requires disassembling the door's interior. This isn't something that most people will want to tackle on their own, as it can be extremely risky if done improperly.

The lock cylinder must be removed from the handle. To do this, find the screw on the inside of the housing for the lock cylinder (usually located in the upper right-hand corner). It may be hidden beneath plastic pieces or even barely visible. If you cannot locate it, use a screwdriver to remove any trim panels that are blocking your view of the screw. Then, use a screwdriver or awl or a small screwdriver to open the lock cylinder retaining tab and take the cylinder out of the housing.

After you have removed the cylinder you'll need to do some things to prepare it for use. The keyway needs to be cleared of grease and dirt, and the cylinder must be lubricated in order to prevent it from squeezing into the lock. The most efficient method to accomplish this is to use a brake cleaner, which can clean and lubricate the lock components of the cylinder. After the cleaner has been used to clean the cylinder, you can use a screwdriver to remove the 10mm bolt that holds the handle to the housing of the cylinder.

Install the new cylinder and then use the original key to operate it. It is recommended to purchase one that is the same brand and model that you already have. This will ensure that it fits properly and will provide a secure seal. After installation check the door to ensure that the lock is working properly and the door is shut securely.

Door Lock Cylinder Repair

The lock cylinder is the part of your car's door that keys fit into to unlock or secure the door. If the key is stuck in the lock or you have trouble turning it, it could indicate that the door cylinder needs to be replaced.

The lock is typically situated close to the door handle. However, some vehicles put it behind a piece of plastic. If you have a cylinder mounted on a surface remove the faceplate from the door handle and unscrew two or three setscrews on the cylinder.

Once the screw is loose then you can rotate the cylinder, so you can get it out of the door. You'll need to be cautious not to lose any screws during this, so place them in a bag or safe place to be able to replace them later. Then, insert the key into the lock and verify that the tumblers or pins are moving freely. If you hear or feel clicking or a ringing sound, or if the cylinder is seized and needs to be replaced, it's best to replace it.

You can buy new cylinders at any auto parts store, but you will be required to know your car's model and make before you shop. You can also speak with an expert locksmith to replace the door cylinder. They'll be able to match the new lock to your existing key to allow you to use the original lock.

The most common issue with the cylinder for a car lock is that it won't rotate when you attempt to use your key. The procedure for removal of a door handle panel varies depending on the vehicle, but it is generally the same. Once you have removed the panel, locate all of the set screws that hold the lock cylinder. These are usually located in the middle of the panel or on the inside of the door handle depending on the brand and model. Remove the screws and carefully align the cylinder with the keyway. There is a risk of damaging the components if tightening too tightly the screws.

Door Lock Replacement

If your lock is worn-out or looks a bit old, replacing it can provide a new look. This is a simple task that you can do at home in just a few steps. Take the time to check the deadbolt and latch settings on your door. You'll need ensure that the new locks have been installed correctly.

Begin by taking off the screws that secure the knob plate inside to the door. Then, pull the knob and latch off. If the plate inside is decorative and does not have screws, gently pry it up with the screwdriver. The plate could be secured by a pin or may just break off from the edge. Once the plate is removed, it is easy to take off the deadbolt as well as the latch.

Now is the time to put the new plates for your lock in the proper position. Make sure that the inside and exterior plates are positioned over the deadbolt holes in the door jamb and the long metal spindle from the lock cylinder mechanism passing through both holes. Once you have the plates set, insert screws into the screw holes to hold them together loosely. If the plate isn't equipped with screw holes, you can simply slide it on the latch.

When you put the lock back together, be careful not to reuse the old screws (unless you have the same color). Use the screws included in the new lock kit instead. If you don't have the proper size screws, go to your hardware store or home improvement store to purchase screws that match the rest of your new door lock's hardware.

Make sure that your new deadbolts and latch plates are of the same length as the original ones, and that they're placed in the right place over the hole in the jamb. Once everything is set you can push the remaining screws in order to tighten them up. Now you can test the deadbolt and latch by using your key. If the key won't turn, it's time to call a locksmith.
