There are a number of things that could be wrong with your power door locks. Automotive locksmiths are able to handle many of these problems on a regular basis.

If your vehicle's power locks are not working or make a buzzing or 'machine gun' noise when you lock or unlock them it's because of an actuator that's dying. Replacing the actuator is easy, however it differs between different brands and models.

Broken or damaged Lock Cylinder

A damaged lock cylinder can be a hassle, particularly when you're trying to access your car after a break-in. Fortunately, a locksmith can usually replace the cylinder quickly and inexpensively. A locksmith can also replace the damaged door lock actuator, which is a tiny motor that turns the lock cylinder to open or close the door.

The lock cylinder operates in a similar manner to the lock mechanism of your home door. When you insert the key, it presses on a set of spring-loaded pins that align them to form a shearline, allowing you turn the cylinder and open or shut the door. If the cylinder becomes damaged or stuck however, it could stop the key from turning all. You might be able to smooth the cylinder by using graphite or WD-40 in some situations. However, these solutions aren't efficient.

The ignition lock cylinder is located on the right-hand side of the steering column, close to the shift lever. It is housed inside the electrical component that locks the ignition switch, usually attached to the steering column. It's difficult to get to the ignition lock cylinder. Many mechanics suggest replacing it instead of trying to repair it.

To remove the ignition coil, disconnect and isolate the negative cable from the battery. You'll then need to remove any trim panels covering the lock cylinder area, using a screwdriver to remove any fasteners that hold it in place. Then, use a pick or screwdriver to loosen the lock cylinder retaining tab and remove the lock cylinder out of the housing.

If the new mechanical key you purchased doesn't turn the ignition cylinder, try spraying WD40 on the cylinder for ignition lock and shaking the key. If this doesn't help, you can bump the cylinder. To bump a lock, simply insert the new mechanical key into the cylinder halfway and then press in with the large screwdriver (rubber is best). Bumping the lock cylinder may help to unstick wafers that have become misaligned and are preventing the lock from turning.

Keys damaged or broken

If your car key breaks or is damaged, it can cause more trouble than an easy lockout. This is why it's important to have a spare car key. Don't be worried if you don't have a spare. Your broken car key may be less difficult to fix than you think.

The first thing to look at is the circuit board and battery. If the circuit board and battery are in good working order, it's possible that your key's grooves have worn away. This can cause your key to get stuck in the ignition, or not turn. This can be corrected by a locksmith by matching the grooves.

Keys older than a decade are more likely to break due to repeated strain from being inserted and turned in the lock. Utilizing your keys as a tool, such as to open a soda bottle or cut through plastic packaging is another reason keys tend to break and wear down. It's always recommended to use a multi-purpose tool or pliers instead of your keys for these jobs.

If you do have a key that is barely identifiable, a locksmith could create a duplicate from the remaining components. You may be required to provide proof of ownership to qualify for this service.

It is possible to spray lubricant onto your key, based on the type you need to remove it from the ignition. If the key is stuck in the ignition, you should leave it to a professional as it could damage the locking mechanisms or the ignition cylinder.

It's worth mentioning that some car insurance companies provide roadside assistance for broken or lost keys. It is best to check your policy to see whether this is a possibility for you. If they are, they'll typically send someone out to unlock your door and assist you to find the keys. They may even be able to provide you a new key right on the spot, depending on what kind of key you have. This could save time and money in the long term.

Faulty window switches

A defective switch could cause a window to move up and down in a sporadic manner or not at all. To determine if there's an issue with the motor for the window it is necessary to disable the electrical connections in the door panel. Start by checking for a fuse that has been blown, as they can often be the reason why windows aren't functioning. After replacing any faulty fuse it is possible to bypass the window switches. Connect the connector wires to a battery power source like an extension cord or car battery. Once you have connected the wires to an external power source, use the window switch to test the motor. If the motor of the window functions normally and the switch isn't at fault, then there is a mechanical issue with the window mechanism, its track, or perhaps a defective power window regulator.

If the motor for the window is not working and here the switch is in good condition There could be an issue with the window guides that hold it in the position. These can be damaged or loosened which could cause the window to slide off its tracks, which can cause jamming to the motor assembly. This is a common issue on older cars with gear-type window regulators.

In some cases power window actuators can also wear out or get stuck in the down or up position. These are the parts that control the window's movement and usually produce noises that are buzzing or a surprising rattling noise when they fail. You can replace the actuators however, first you'll need remove the window panel.

The removal of the window panels is contingent on the model of the car however, it is generally simple. After you have the panel removed, you will have to remove the trim or covers that hold it in place. You will then need to carefully probe the switch panels to determine the source of the issue. If the switch panel is found to be defective then you can replace it with a brand new unit.
